- Credit card interest is among the most expensive credit, so clear it first.
- Avalanche (highest rate first) saves the most interest; snowball (smallest balance first) builds momentum.
- The best method is the one you will stick to.
Credit card interest in India is often 3 to 4 percent a month, which is why unpaid balances grow so quickly. If you have several cards, a clear plan helps.
The two methods
Avalanche
Pay the minimum on every card, and put all the extra money on the card with the highest interest rate. When it is cleared, move to the next.
Snowball
Pay the minimum on every card and put the extra money on the smallest balance. Each cleared card gives a quick win.
An illustrative example
You owe ₹50,000 at 42% a year, ₹20,000 at 36% and ₹10,000 at 30%, and you can pay ₹8,000 a month, including ₹1,000 as the minimum on each.
- Avalanche: debt-free in about 13 months, total paid about ₹98,000.
- Snowball: also about 13 months, total paid about ₹99,500.
The difference is small here because the rates are close. When rates differ widely, the avalanche gap grows. This example ignores late fees and new spending.
Other options
- Consolidate: a personal loan or balance transfer at a lower rate can replace several card balances if the total cost, including fees, is lower. Use the balance transfer calculator.
- Stop new charges on the cards you are paying off.
- Convert to EMI only if the effective rate is lower than the revolving rate.
Keep an eye on your utilization as balances fall.
